I have always been a big fan of the David Crowder Band. One of the reasons is because of the vivid imagery that he paints in my head with his lyrics. This song in particular really leaves an impression on me. So I’ll try be brief when I describe what goes on in my head whenever I listen to this song.
He is jealous for me,
Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree,
Bending beneath the weight of his wind and mercy.
They say that whenever a hurricane comes, the only trees that are left standing are the ones that sway and bend to the might of the winds, while the tall and proud trees that refuse to bend get uprooted. With this, I can see how when we surrender and bend to the love that God bestows upon us, we will still be left standing as opposed to where we stand tall and proud refusing to budge and be moved by God’s love, we will eventually be uprooted.
When all of a sudden,
I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory,
And I realize just how beautiful You are,
And how great Your affections are for me.
Being humans, we are steeped in sin, prone to depravity. But then God sends His Son to die on the cross for our sins to be like an eclipse that blot out the sun so that our names would not be blotted out from the Book of Life. That is because when Jesus comes into our lives, He washes away our sins, eclipsing them so that they are no longer seen.
We are His portion and He is our prize,
Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes,
If grace is an ocean, we’re all sinking.
Grace as an ocean. An ocean where there are shores where even the youngest of His children can play but also there are depths to which no man has ever explored for we cannot fully fathom God. So as we sink in His immense grace for us, we are enveloped as it fills our every being, every organ, every pore on our skin till we die to our old selves and become a new creation.
And Heaven meets earth like an unforseen kiss,
And my heart turns violently inside of my chest,
I don’t have time to maintain these regrets,
When I think about, the way…
The reason why kisses are so stimulating is because it is a tactile sensory organ that contains that contain alot of nerve endings. There with the intimate contact of one’s lips to another, their lips are not the only things stimulated but almost the person’s entire body. (Yay for anatomy and physiology…) When the point of contact between Heaven and Earth occurred through Jesus being fully man and God, the world lit up and the Heavens rejoiced!
Also, just as a kiss requires around 34 facial muscles and 112 postural muscles, it was only of great sacrifice, through the Crusifiction of Jesus, that the connection between Heaven and Earth was established.
Yeah, He loves us,
Oh! how He loves us,
Oh! how He loves us,
Oh! how He loves.
Lastly, the song ends with the simple truth of how He loves us. Simply amazing.
I love this song a ridiculous amount, and it is one hundred percent because of the lyrics. Crowder has an amazing way with words. I was at a retreat this weekend where this song was featured in worship service, and some of the words were wrong on the display…and it threw me off, because the sentiment here is so pure and so worshipful.
Psalm 139 tells us that His thoughts toward us are more numerous than the sands–and that is what I walk away with here. the vastness and the great depth of His Love.
“I don’t have time to maintain these regrets” His love is bigger than our worry, bigger than we can imagine it to be, and it is stronger than we can comprehend. That simple truth in such simple and beautiful words, is why I love this song.
I really enjoyed your reactions to the song; particularly, I had never thought of the line about an unforeseen kiss the way you do. In my mind, the line is about a kiss you don’t anticipate, a high intensity declaration of affection. I appreciate the connection you make between the idea of a kiss connecting to people as a metaphor for how Jesus connects the world with God.
I look forward to reading more from you, and thanks for the comment on my first entry!
